According to the UN, each day nearly 1,000 children die due to preventable water and sanitation related diarrhoeal diseases.
The washing of hands with soap at critical times - after using a toilet, when cooking food or before eating - is highly effective in preventing a number of those diseases. Unfortunately, for many families, especially those who are forcibly displaced people or refugees, running water simply isn't an option. Because adults and older children have already built-up resistance, children younger than 5 years of age are the most vulnerable.
