Just 9% of Madagascar’s rural population has access to safely managed drinking water.  A further 27% of the rural population does have some level of basic service but the 64% have limited or no access to clean water.  A full 18% of rural populations only have access to surface water.

The picture is better – in relative terms – in urban areas with 38% having access to safe water, but the national average is still only 21%.

Billions of people around the world are continuing to suffer from poor access to water, sanitation and hygiene, according to a report by UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

  • 2 billion people around the world do not have ‘safely managed drinking water services’ – ie they don’t have clean running water
  • 2 billion people do not have ‘safely managed sanitation services’ -ie they don’t have hygienic toilets
  • 3 billion lack ‘basic handwashing facilities’ – ie they cannot wash their hands with soap and water in the home

The Joint Monitoring Programme report, Progress on drinking water, sanitation and hygiene: 2000-2017: Special focus on inequalities  reveals that while 1.8 billion people have gained access to basic drinking water services since 2000, there are huge inequalities in the accessibility, availability and quality of these services.

It is estimated that 1 in 10 people (785 million) still lack basic services, including an astonishingly large number of 144 million people who drink untreated surface water.

The data shows that 8 in 10 people living in rural areas lacked access to clean water.

The report highlighted new data showing 3 billion people lack basic handwashing facilities with soap and water at home in 2017.  And that nearly ¾  of the population of the Least Developed Countries did not have basic handwashing facilities.

SaniTap knows that its aim and mission meets a real and widespread human need.  Partnering with SaniTap will save lives.

H2O 4 CO2: Innovative WASH financing for Madagascar https://sanitap.org/h2o-4-co2-innovative-wash-financing-for-madagascar/ Thu, 20 Jan 2022 09:12:26 +0000 https://sanitap.org/?p=6723 Traceable, high-quality voluntary carbon credits generated through a 10-year greenhouse gas emissions reductions programme, by providing access to safe drinking water by 650,000 people.

This pro-poor carbon project in Madagascar removes 240,000 tCO2 annually, by restoring access to safe drinking water to 650,000 people who presently rely on contaminated water from rivers. This is done by rehabilitating over 2 thousand non-functioning rural water points; and maintaining these for a decade or more. These handpumps were constructed in the past by aid organisations or other development organisations, but have fallen into disrepair due to absent technical repair skills, lack of organizational capacity or spare parts, poverty or extreme climate events such as cyclones and drought.

Victims of climate change

Madagascar is the one of the world’s poorest countries; and one of the few countries that is consistently getting poorer. “In the last 20 years GDP per capita has not grown; and the number in extreme poverty increased almost one-for-one with total population”. Presently, the country is “on the brink of experiencing the world’s first climate change famine”, according to the United Nations, which says tens of thousands of people are already suffering catastrophic levels of hunger and food insecurity after four years without rain.

National Handwashing Day – October 2020

SaniTap is delighted to announce that Business Connect is one of our new global distributors for our flagship SaniTap handwashing dispenser. BC’s mission is to provide citizens living in the Global South with affordable and easy access to clean water, through the creation of sustainable local business models. The SaniTap seamlessly fits within their portfolio. Washing hands is of course especially important in response to the Coronavirus.

The first SaniTap shipments have already been dispatched to various countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas, and we look forward to reaching increasing numbers of people with the health benefits of handwashing with soap, even if there is no running water at home.

Business Connect stated in their press release:

“This product provides clean water for washing hands, which is especially important in response to the Coronavirus. To avoid recontamination of washed hands, the unique spout design easily pulls down with just two fingers, and can be closed by a gentle upwards tap with the back of the hand. The net keeps the bar of soap conveniently near the flow of water and prevents the bar from falling on the ground or getting lost.”

To minimise the use of water, important in water-scarce environments, the spout dispenses a minimal amount of water that is more than sufficient to wash hands. The device can conveniently be hung by a nail or from a stick and delivers 3 litres of water over 10 minutes – that’s enough for a family of 5 to wash their hands 3 times a day.

We are thrilled in this example of collaboration within the WASH sector.
